pocketfull of love

Remember when we used to pass notes in Junior High? And write our first name with the last name of the boy we were crushing on? Well, now that we’re grown up and have our own permanent crush or sweet sweet children (not it), we can send our love through this handmade DIY craft. (I’d like to mention that this is the FIRST thing I’ve ever sewn on the sewing machine…It’s that easy.)

Here’s what you need:

Felt (2 pieces–any colors)
Scissors
Chalk or pen
Sewing Machine (and all the necessities)
Thread
Stuffing (I used polyester fiberfill)
The stuffing is easily found at Hobby Lobby or Wal-Mart

Alrighty now. First, cut out a heart. Make it symmetrical, non-symmetrical, or however you like. I googled non-symmetrical heart, found a heart I liked, and then free handedly (not a word..I’m aware) drew it on the felt with a pen. You can use a pen because the marked on side can be sewn on the inside of your pillow (we’ll call it a pillow) and never been seen.

After you cut it out, if it looks funny, you can do some trimming. Now, lay your cutout on top of your other piece of felt and pin it in. CUT the second piece of felt out.

Next cut a piece of felt out to be your pocket. I free-handed this, as well. Just snipped a little to make sure it fit.

Sew your pocket on. Next, line the hearts up and pin them so they don’t shift when you sew. Then begin sewing around the edges of your heart. Might I suggest that you sew the curves first. I didn’t do that, and I wish I had because when I stuffed the pillow then tried finishing up the sewing, I ran into difficulty at the humps of the heart.

Basically sew it just enough so that you can stuff your pillow, then finish it off. When all the edges are sewn, squeeze your pillow a bit do make the stuffing consistent in all places. I just had a brain fart. There has to be an easier, much more eloquent way to say “consistent in all places”.  Take your pins out, then take your pen out (get it?), write your someone special a note and leave it for him/her to find!

You COULD give this as a gift!
